We don’t work directly/are not contracted with insurance companies here at South Shore Family Health Collaborative. We can, however, supply clients with a detailed receipt (or Superbill) that they can submit to an insurance provider that offers out-of-network reimbursement. That is something each client will need to check with their insurance provider prior to starting services.
We are not contracted with insurance companies for a number of reasons:
- Insurance companies require a diagnosis and here at South Shore we take a systemic approach to mental health. Unfortunately, insurance companies do not. While some diagnoses are helpful, supportive, and clarifying for treatment, often mental health and relational concerns are a complex interaction of history, systemic concerns (family and larger systems), and reactions to trauma.
- We prioritize health for our clients and our clinicians. Insurance payment rates for mental health providers do not offer our therapists the ability to make a living wage while navigating additional life demands and caring for themselves and clients well.
- Insurance companies can dictate the treatment modality, number of sessions that can be provided, and how often services can be accessed. By only accepting out-of-pocket payments, our therapists can truly custom tailor treatments for each individual/partnership/family/group depending on their needs. Clients can also have more say into what the course of treatment can be.
- We take confidentiality very seriously. Very simply, insurance companies are not free from security breaches. The fewer people/organizations we share your information with, the less likely that private information will be leaked. This is especially important with clients who share potentially sensitive information (i.e. our sex therapy clients). While we practice in Massachusetts where many communities are safe(safer) from discrimination, there are increasing threats to the LGBTQ community and women’s rights (to name a few). We are fierce allies and are committed to offering care despite the political climate and that means guarding your information from large organizations.
