Our therapists have a long history of working with older couples. Restoring identities, intimacy, and feeling particularly understood in this life stage lead to a more fulfilling life.
Couples Therapy with older couples is difficult, and often misunderstood by therapists. Working with elders around sexuality and relationships, however, can be life affirming. Restoring sexual identity with older couples can reduce depression and anxiety, foster better health processes, reduce hospital and assisted living admissions, and benefit families at every developmental level.
Myths about aging and sexuality can be dispelled, and sexual practices can be reconstructed. This is brief therapy. Rather than thinking about working with older people as being a long term or slow process, older couples can make decisions and develop more positive interactions in a relatively short time. The desire for touch and intimacy among older couples is just below the surface.
Orgasms and erections are not critical to sexual satisfaction. Surgical responses are not required to fix the randomness of erections in later life. The Couples and Sex Therapists at South Shore Sexual Health Center have a long history of working with older couples around sexuality, and have access to supervision from therapists with decades of experience.
We have an Older Couples Group (age 65+) that meets the first Wednesday of every month from 5:30-7pm Eastern Time. Please reach out for more information about the potential to join.
